Hey all,
Any of you tried any of this? I currently grow sprouts, one tower, a pretty small operation.
I'd do some protein source if I thought I could. Escargot seems appealing, so does tilapia. But I have no idea if the blind could raise fish. Not at all interested in handling / caring for insects, let alone eating them.
Anyway, what have you all tried in this regard?
I tried container gardening once. I kill silk plants so I wasn't hugely successful. I think I tried to do too much to begin with so sort of shot myself in the foot so to speak. There's a guy named Mel something or other who wrote a book on Container gardening. He's also got stuff on youtube.
Sprouts are easier. I'm pretty spotty in the botanical department myself. But
with a sprout tower, you just move each tray up one level per day and by the
time it's at the top it's grown. You just run water over them each day to keep
them clean and moist. And after running the final tray and emptying it, just
wash it up real good and use that tray to put the seeds that were in the soaker
in the bottom, so top tray becomes tray 2 from the bottom. The soaker tray
never drains, you empty that deliberately. ,
When I was a kid I'd start things like tomatoes and such in a can then move them outside once they were ready. Right now I don't have a kitchen window or I'd give it a go.
If you've got a porch or balcony you are set. I'd say it wasn't hard.
Now canning seems to be lots of work. My mom and grand did it often. You need jars and such.
Because we have stores and farmers markets were you can get fresh items and such, I'm not sure canning is cost effective anymore as it once was.
I guess it is much like cooking anything else, but it does take some time to do it, supplies, utilities.
My daughter was in to the locavore thing in high school, so I looked into how to
do the canning, saw it was too much effort and just blanched / froze fruits and
veggies. I'm merely curious to see what others do who are blind and living in
tight spaces. Sprouts are pretty easy and versatile so that's what I have been
doing, just wheat grass for now but there's other seeds you can sprout with
good results.
how do sprouts look like? sorry I could not translate that into german. I grow Aloe Vera in my living room. the last plant died but I certainly got a new one. but are there some different kinds of it? I had one with small, slender Long leaves but now I got one with quite fat leaves. also the Spikes are much shorter or the thorns on the leaves. since the inner part of the leaves is eatable and heals your Skin when you have burned yourself or have allergies so this is an Allrounder :) so I think you Count this to home farming
Sprouts are what happens when you put seeds in water and they start to grow leaves and stems.
There's a verb, to sprout, which means to start growing from a seed.
Sprouts are just teeny baby plants and often they're used by the Orientals and others for salads and soups.
aaaaaahaaa
I would grow hot peppers if my balcony faced the sun.
Curious: Are pepper plants annuals or perennials? And can you just take some of the seeds from the peppers and replant?
I'm pretty plant-ignorant, even though I do live in Oregon, a state noted for its numerous Earth Mamas and plant people / pagans.
When I lived back in Savannah Tennessee, plenty of people would give me cabbage out of their garden and I'd make homemade sauerkraut. It's really easy to do. I do grow aloe vera plants now, but that's all.
How do you make homemade sauerkraut? I'd love to know actually, because I like sauerkraut and sausage.
As an aside, burned out on doing sprouts. I know someone out here who is low income and hence has a harder time getting green vegies, so gave her and them the sprouter so they can cheaply grow their own sprouts.
I'd do herb gardening indoors, but am scared of what kind of unwanted visitors that could attract. wish I had a balcony to try it.
I got a verticle garden / produce going on inside the house. Mainly herbs etc. it is great because it is clean, with no soil and very little work. it is also great for the air and environment, especially with dogs and cats around. It is grow on an hydroponic system, with only water feeds. Sometime in the future I will do fish as well, but not keen on cleaning up the fish tank or such though.
